Eduard Feireisl is Professor of Mathematics in the Institute of Mathematics of the Czech Academy of Sciences. He is a renowned specialist in the mathematical theory of fluid dynamics whose expertise has been recognized by many awards, the latest being the Neuron Award for Contribution to Science.

Objectives

The Navier-Stokes equations are an important model for many physical problems. The incompressible case is a well known open problem for proving existence and uniqueness of solutions as exemplified by the Clay Millennium Prize. The case of compressible flows is equally interesting from a mathematical point of view and also has wide applications like in Aerospace industry. This compact course is aimed towards introducing the mathematical theory of compressible Navier-Stokes equations and also their numerical approximations.

Course contents

The lectures will be based on the upcoming book Eduard Feireisl, T. Karper, M. Pokorny: MATHEMATICAL THEORY OF COMPRESSIBLE VISCOUS FLUIDS, Springer.

Pre-requisites

The audience should be familiar with Sobolev spaces, general theory of PDE's and, ideally, must know something about fluid flow modeling (Navier-Stokes).

Who can apply ?

The course is open to PhD research scholars, post-docs, faculty and scientists working in mathematics, physics and engineering departments. Preference will be given to those working in Navier-Stokes equations.

How to apply ?

Selection will be made based on your CV and research interests. Please send your latest CV and also ask your advisor to send a recommendation letter to cns2016@tifrbng.res.in
