Title:Some phenomena arising from time-frequency analysis and representation theory
Speaker:Prof. G. B. Folland
University of Washington, Seattle, USA
Abstract:Among the basic operations of analysis of functions on the real line are translations, f(t) --> f(t+a), and modulations, f(t) --> exp(ibt)f(t). In this talk we consider some questions connected with the group of operators generated by translations and modulations by integer multiples of some fixed amounts. These questions, on the one hand, are connected with techniques that are useful in signal processing theory, and on the other, provide examples of some rather bizarre phenomena in group representation theory.
